Park’s ‘Thirst’ Is Riveting

Park Chan-wook’s latest work “Thirst,’’ like other great movies, makes you forget you’re watching one, and you won’t be able to stop it from shaking up every cell in your body unless you dart for the exit. Park-brand films are undoubtedly an acquired taste, and this vampire-priest story, slated to compete in Cannes next month, is certainly not for those with weak stomachs. Nor is it, despite being replete with tasteful humor only Song Kang-ho (“Secret Sunshine’’) can pull off and being the first South Korean film to be co-produced by a major Hollywood studio, for those seeking light-hearted entertainment.

Lee Da-hae couples up with Baek Sung-hyun

The two actors are featured in kpop singer Kim Hyung-joong’s rather hyped music video; the song is his new single “Today’s Fortune” [오늘의 운세]. The video itself is somewhat standard kpop ballad fare; the story is told post-breakup, with flashbacks that point to a happier time when the couple was in love.

Lee Da-hae last acted in the large-scale MBC drama East of Eden, although she caused something of a stir when she dropped out early citing dissatisfaction with her character and was subsequently written out of the series. She spent some time abroad on vacation, and hasn’t yet picked a follow-up project. After the disappointing drama series Robbers and the cute but forgettable Hello Miss, I hope she picks a project better suited to her talents, which are many, but which have unfortunately been overshadowed by mediocre projects or characters.

Meanwhile, Baek Sung-hyun, a former child actor, is one of those up-and-comers to keep an eye on (in my opinion). He acted in dramas like Damo and Stairway to Heaven when he was in his early teens, and is now transitioning to more adult roles. He was more recently in the Kim Su-ro comedy film (alongside other up-and-comers Lee Min-ho and Park Bo-young) Our High School E.T., and will soon be seen on KBS’s new romantic comedy series Just Looking (aka That Fool aka the former Six Months), which stars Kim Ah-joong and Hwang Jung-min.

Korea and Japan Unite to find new girl group

Japanese idol girl group, Morning Musume announced their support for the first joint Korea-Japan audition venture project called the Great Toyko Girls with 4 of the group’s members arriving in Seoul on the 27th. Besides promoting the joint project venture during their time here, they will also be meeting up with their fans. The 4 members of Morning Museume who are here in Seoul include Ai Takahashi (leader), Risa Niigaki (fluent in Korean language), Reina Tanaka (cute looks) and Lin Lin (Chinese descent). They already have many fans in Korea and said that they could not wait to meet the future members that will join their family. This will be Morning Musume’s first visit back to Korea since their last concert on 1st June 2008.

The joint project is a collaboration between Mnet Korea and the media company behind Morning Museume, Upfront. The name of the group at the end of the audtions will be known as Haro Project and the members will be chosen from Korea. The preliminary cut for the Great Tokyo Girls search will air on Mnet in mid-May with 2PM’s Junho and Chansung confirmed as hosts for the program.
